Parallels Desktop 12 for Mac Pro Edition - Instant Download for Mac (1 Computer)

I use a 13” 2010 MacBook Pro for portable computing. The 13” is unique among old MacBooks in that it recognizes 16 GB memory and when I added a SSD it works well. I updated Mac O/S several times and now run High Sierra, the last that will run on this MacBook Pro. I had not run Windows and Parallels for a while. When I needed it to run Durametric, a Windows based OBDC2 for my Boxster to check codes, my old Parallels would not run. I determined that Parallels12 was most compatible. Parallels 12 installed easily with no issues. After installation, Windows and Durametric ran fine and I cleared my “check engine” light after I affected repairs. I have used Parallels since it replaced Connectix Virtual PC and it is a great tool, getting better with each release.

I found that on the same Mac, Parallels VM in most cases works much better than exactly the same VM works under VMware Fusion. Performance is noticeably faster, the CPU temperature is much lower.

Works well allowing me to install Windows, and run Windows programs on my iMac. Easy to transfer files from one OS to the other, and use the network places to show shared files and folders from the MAC side.

I have used Parallels for many years now (since version 7). It has been a great product, but there are a few alarming developments. The most alarming one is that the free VirtualBox has closed the innovation gap dramatically. Now in many cases I find VirtualBox easier to use and work with than Parallels. The second trend is declining Parallels support. Easy and quick support does not exist anymore. Even for the Pro version one has to jump through extra steps as support codes. Several years ago Parallels really impressed me. Now we have to deal with subscriptions, difficult support, and other issues. But it feels like Parallels simply stopped innovating.

I had Parallels 5 running on Mac OS 10.6.8. It was incredible. I could run Mac OS simultaneously with Windows 7. Everything worked great. But since the computer companies are forcing everyone to downgrade to a newer OS I eventually had to get a newer computer to run the latest OS or risk not having any ability to run my business since systematically each web browser and software program was being forcibly retired to where it would not work, or not work with websites needed (changing the OS on my existing hardware was not an option).Parallels gives you version 13 even though the box says 12. Everything installed and the Mac migration assistant made the transition to a new computer as easy as it could be. My old Windows was there as if by magic.However it is ridiculously slow. So slow that Windows boots but you can't run any Windows programs and while Parallels is running the Mac works so slow that you get constant "spinning beach balls." I am running the newest iMac with 8GB ram. I suspect that you need at least 16GB or more to make this work. Unfortunately the new 21" iMacs don't have expandable RAM (at least without performing risky and major "surgery" to your computer).So I am going to have to keep my old Mac running the old Parallels so I can access the 2 Windows programs I have to run, and just run the new Mac for Mac stuff. Which means the Parallels 13 was a complete waste.

Clunky, takes forever to load, runs slow--gosh, maybe I gave it a star too many? Oh yah, "upgrades" are around $30--on sale. Thumbs down.
