Frequently Asked Questions

What is the difference between SoundID Reference for Headphones, Speakers and Headphones, and Multichannel?

The editions are aimed at different monitoring setups. The Headphones edition focuses on supported headphone calibration. Speakers and Headphones adds stereo speaker measurement and calibration, while the Multichannel edition is designed for larger speaker configurations in addition to stereo and headphone workflows. Choose the edition that matches the monitoring system you actually need to calibrate. If you expect to move from headphones to speakers or from stereo to immersive monitoring later, also review Sonarworks' current upgrade paths before buying.

Do I need a measurement microphone to use Sonarworks SoundID Reference?

You do not need a measurement microphone for ordinary headphone calibration because SoundID Reference uses profiles for supported headphone models. Speaker calibration is different: Sonarworks' speaker workflow requires a supported omnidirectional measurement microphone and an audio interface capable of supplying the required microphone connection and phantom power. Check the exact edition because a Headphones license and a Speakers and Headphones or Multichannel license unlock different capabilities.

Can SoundID Reference calibrate audio outside my DAW?

Yes. SoundID Reference includes a standalone/system-wide workflow in addition to its DAW plug-in workflow. The system-wide option applies calibration to supported computer audio output beyond a single music-production session, while the DAW plug-in is intended for monitoring inside a DAW. This distinction matters if you want calibrated sound while listening to reference tracks, browsers, media players, or other desktop applications as well as while mixing.

How do I know whether my headphones are supported by SoundID Reference?

Check Sonarworks' current supported-headphones list and match the exact brand and model. SoundID Reference provides calibration profiles for hundreds of headphone models, but a profile for a similar-looking model should not be treated as a substitute. Sonarworks specifically advises against using a different model's profile because the correction can be inaccurate. If your headphones are not listed, consider a supported model or Sonarworks' individual calibration options rather than forcing an approximate profile.

What plug-in formats does SoundID Reference support?

Current SoundID Reference editions support major professional plug-in formats including AU, VST2, VST3, and AAX, depending on platform and host. That covers many common DAWs, but you should still verify the exact version of your DAW and operating system before purchasing. Plug-in format support is only one part of compatibility; processor architecture, OS version, audio drivers, and integrated hardware can also affect whether the complete monitoring workflow is supported.

What is Sonarworks SoundID VoiceAI, and how is it different from SoundID Reference?

SoundID VoiceAI is a voice-processing product for transforming or processing vocal performances inside a DAW, while SoundID Reference is a monitoring-calibration system for speakers and headphones. They solve different problems: one changes vocal audio creatively, while the other corrects the monitoring response you hear while producing or listening. If your goal is more accurate mixing decisions, look at SoundID Reference; if your goal is AI-assisted vocal processing, evaluate VoiceAI and its connectivity and DAW requirements.

What hardware do I need for Sonarworks speaker calibration?

For stereo speaker measurement, plan on a supported measurement microphone, a compatible audio interface, the necessary microphone cable, and access to the listening position and speaker setup you want to measure. Multichannel calibration adds more setup requirements because more speakers and channels are involved. Sonarworks also supports selected hardware integrations that can store calibration profiles directly. Review the requirements for your exact edition and interface before purchasing so the calibration workflow matches your studio hardware.

Can SoundID Reference work with supported audio hardware without leaving the computer calibration running?

For selected integration devices, SoundID Reference can export compatible calibration profiles to supported hardware, allowing correction to run on the device's own DSP rather than only through the computer's software path. Integration support varies by device and by profile type, and not every interface or monitor supports the same stereo, multichannel, or headphone profiles. Check Sonarworks' current integration list for your exact hardware model before buying if hardware-based calibration is important to your setup.
